Bouldering 101: A Newbie's Guide to Crushing It at Indoor Bouldering

So, you're thinking about diving into the world of bouldering, huh? Or maybe you've already dipped your toes and need a bit more insight. Well, you're in the right spot. Here's some tips and hacks to kickstart your indoor bouldering journey. I started this adventure four years ago, and let me tell you, it's been the gateway to all my other crazy adventures. I'm so pumped about it that I had to share some wisdom to get more people hooked, especially since I know how overwhelming it can be at the beginning!

Indoor bouldering has blown up big time in recent years, and it's been awesome to witness. The community's grown, and we've got these awesome climbing centres with sick problems. It's the perfect way to dive into climbing without all learning ropes when you’re just starting out. And the best part? It's a killer workout that doesn't even feel like a workout most of the time! So, let's break down some basics that I wish I knew when I was just starting out. Hopefully, it'll make your initiation a bit less nerve-wracking and keep you safe while you're at it.

Decoding Indoor Bouldering

Indoor bouldering is like rock climbing's cool cousin that goes down on artificial walls, no ropes or harnesses needed. Trust me, these walls are way shorter than the ones you see in route roped climbing. We're talking 3 to 4.5 meters, and there's a bunch of padding underneath, to help with your landings. You'll spot these super bright, neon-coloured handholds and footholds that mimic outdoor rocks – adds a bit of flair to the whole thing.

Must-Have Gear for Newbies

Now, when you're just starting, you can totally roll up to a centre in your comfiest activewear and rent the essentials. Test the waters, see if bouldering is your vibe  and then think about getting your own gear. But when you're ready to take that step, here's the rundown:

·              Climbing Shoes: You don't need crazy aggressive ones off the bat. I'm all about comfy shoes – I rocked Teneya Tarantulas for the first two years, and trust me, my feet thanked me for it. If you're on a budget, snag a pair of those Simond £30 climbing shoes – they'll treat you right. Just make sure they fit properly. Comfort is key for us beginners!

·              Chalk: Most places let you rent chalk, but it can add up. Invest in your own chalk and a boulder bucket early on to keep those hands dry from all the sweat.

·              Finger Balm: Your fingers will take a beating at the start. Get some balm for recovery and to ease the pain after a hardcore session.

·              Brushes: Not a deal-breaker but having your brush to clear chalk from holds can step up your grip game. Grab one when you're feeling fancy. Most gyms have these at the centre though so not an essential purchase by any means!

Scouting Out a Bouldering Gym

Bouldering gyms are literaly are everywhere, making it easy to find one close to you. Start with a quick Google search and then stalk them a bit on Instagram. Check out the vibes, maybe look for some beginner classes or socials – it's a great way to meet fellow climbing newbies!

Climbing Etiquette Crash Course

Even if you're new, showing some respect to other climbers amps up the fun for everyone. Here are the golden rules:

  • Wait Your Turn: Keep it relaxed during peak times, take turns on the wall. Don’t keep jumping front of people.

  • Clean Up: Don't be that guy leaving tape and trash everywhere. Tidy up after yourself.

  • Mind the Fall Zone: Safety first! No sitting or walking under climbers – nobody wants a surprise landing on their head. It can really hurt the climber not just you!

  • Route Awareness: Check where your climb goes so you're not crashing into someone else's adventure.

  • No Judgement Zone:We're all on different climbing journeys. Be cool, be kind, and keep climbing a safe space for everyone :)

Indoor bouldering is incredibly fun in a controlled setting. Hope these tips get you psyched to lace up those climbing shoes, chalk up, and dive into bouldering. Trust me, you won't regret it. Happy Climbing! 🤘
