Exploring Padley Gorge: A Magical Journey through Ancient Woodlands
Embarking on a late-November walk with my friend Meg, we discovered a hidden gem - Padley Gorge. Nestled within an ancient forest, this enchanting circular walk captivates with its mysterious, mystical atmosphere. Gnarled trees adorned with moss and scattered boulders amidst bracken create a magical ambiance. The gorge itself, surrounded by the forest, promises a perfect setting for a refreshing paddle during the hot summer days.
Choosing the Longshaw Estate route, our journey took us through the autumn woods, at their most atmospheric. However, I've heard that May and June reveal a different kind of magic with the rhododendrons in full bloom.
To embark on this beautiful trail, start at the parking area where Hathersage Road meets Owler Bar Road. The adventure kicks off as you step into the Longshaw Estate, meticulously maintained by the National Trust. Cross the B6521 and follow the whimsical path of Burbage Brook, guiding you through Lawrence Field, Longshaw Estate, and finally, Padley Gorge.
Padley Gorge itself is a treasure trove of ancient woodlands featuring oak, beech, birch, and alder trees. The air resonates with the calls of various birds, including woodpeckers, flycatchers, and dippers. For a visual treat, plan your visit in autumn when the beech trees paint a breath-taking canvas of colors. There is also a hidden waterfall if you keep an eye out!
Conclude your journey by following the Burbage Brook back to the trailhead. For nature enthusiasts, the Longshaw Estate offers guided tours showcasing its rich wildlife. After your hike head to the nearby pub for well-deserved refreshments. Get ready for a hike that's not only beautiful but also filled with the thrill of discovering the magic that lies within Padley Gorge.
